The movie and CD are titled “This Is It” – not because Jackson has passed away and this is the last “new” material we will ever hear from the King of Pop.
The “This Is It” tour was scheduled to commence July 2009 and run through March of 2010. The first show was to take place on July 8, 2009. That and all subsequent shows were slated to occur in the O2 Arena in London, England. Jackson died less than 3 weeks before the concert tour was to start, leaving the world shocked and saddened.
The Michael Jackson “This Is It” concert tour was originally slated to be 10 individual concerts, but because the original shows sold out immediately, and because of such high public demand, an additional 40 concerts were scheduled. These sold out as well. In fact, so many fans were interested in obtaining the tickets that they caused the two sights offering advance ticket sales to crash moments after going live. Over 190,00 tickets were sold during the first two hours after they became available for purchase.
Upon Jackson’s death, the concert promoter, AEG Live offered ticket holders the option of a full refund, or a souvenir ticket, the actual ticket they would have received to attend the actual concert, this was designed by Jackson himself.

While rehearsing for the concert, over 100 hours of film footage was recorded. These recordings are the basis for the “This Is It” CD and the “This Is It” DVD. The recordings are comprised of hours of show rehearsal and preparation. Columbia Pictures in AEG Live (the concert promoter) bought the rights to this footage and created “This Is It.” 90% of the proceeds of the film will go to the Jackson estate. The CD will feature music in the same order as in the film.
When Jackson died on June 25, 2009, due to cardiac arrest, attributed to an overdose of many strong medications, the world cried out in anguish. There was a high demand from the public for some way to mourn, and for some opportunity to have a memento.
The concert was supposedly the last concert Jackson was going to give. He was reported to have been talking of retirement after completing this concert tour.
